KNIGHT-RIDDER, LANDMARK FORM COMPANY FOR ELECTRONIC PUBLISHING Norfolk, Va. -- Knight-Ridder, Inc., and Landmark Communications Inc. today announced the formation of a joint venture that will help newspapers into the Internet access and electronic publishing businesses. The new company, known as InfiNet, will expand Landmark's 18-month-old Internet venture across the country through alliances with daily newspapers. InfiNet helps newspapers establish services on the World Wide Web without their making a capital investment and provides an immediate revenue stream to publishers as a share of access fees. "The partnership is a winning combination not only for Knight-Ridder and Landmark, but also for the U.S. newspaper community," said P. Anthony Ridder, president and CEO of Knight-Ridder. "We will share our companies' combined experiences in electronic publishing with each of InfiNet's newspaper affiliates." "We have been encouraged by our success in gaining subscriptions and growing ad revenue," said Frank Batten, chairman of Landmark. "Knight-Ridder is an excellent partner to help us take InfiNet to the next level." InfiNet currently serves eight markets, and will add five more by July. Over the next two years, InfiNet is prepared to enter as many as 100 markets, including the majority of the 26 cities in which Knight-Ridder publishes daily newspapers. InfiNet's approach complements that of the recently announced New Century Network, a consortium of the nine largest newspapers companies, because it focuses on the access portion of the business. Knight-Ridder is a founding partner of NCN. Bob Ingle, Knight-Ridder vice president for new media and a member of the NCN board said: "The InfiNet model offers publishers a low-risk way to begin online efforts and offer their customers first-rate, full-service Internet access at the same time." InfiNet will work closely with publishers to help the newspaper industry enter electronic publishing, said David Richards, a former Landmark executive who was named president of the joint venture. "InfiNet will conform to any standards that may be set by New Century Network," he said. In April, InfiNet signed an agreement with CBS television network calling for InfiNet to act as CBS's primary contractor in helping the network's more than 200 affiliate TV stations establish a presence on the World Wide Web.
