If you ever want to remove yourself from this mailing list, send the following command in email to "Majordomo@marketplace.com": unsubscribe online-news rexb@eng.dowjones.com (Rex Ballard) Here's the general information for the list you've subscribed to, in case you don't already have it: =================================================================== ONLINE-NEWS WELCOME AND FAQ (FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS) =================================================================== Last updated: 2/4/94 by Steve Outing Dear fellow digital journalist: Welcome to the online-news mailing list! We look forward to reading your contributions. WHAT IS THIS LIST ABOUT? ------------------------ Online-news is an Internet mailing list on the topic of online newspapers and magazines. It serves as a forum to discuss the evolution of newspaper and magazine experiments in electronic publishing. It also is the place in cyberspace where professionals working to design electronic publications of the future meet to get to know each other and exchange ideas. Two years ago, there were only a few newspapers and magazines operating online services. Today there are more than 40 newspapers and numerous magazines with electronic "editions." Many more -- perhaps most -- publishers today are taking a serious look at opportunities for going digital. Online-news covers the various avenues publishers have taken on this journey, from the commercial services -- America Online, CompuServe, Delphi and Prodigy -- to independent BBSs, to the Internet. This is the place to discuss what works and what doesn't, how to integrate these services into the newsroom, how to train and recruit staff for these new ventures, advertising issues, software, potential readership, how to make money with electronic editions, job postings, etc. CAN WE DISCUSS OTHER ASPECTS OF JOURNALISM HERE? ------------------------------------------------ Online-news is NOT a general journalism discussion list. Its subject matter is limited to electronic publications. To keep the traffic to a manageable level, and for subscribers to get the most out of this list, we have elected to keep discussions limited to the topic of online newspapers, magazines and newsletters. It is primarily a communications tool for professionals and educators in electronic publishing. Please help us keep this list focused. If you are looking for a more general journalism forum, try CARR-L (Computer Assisted Reporting/Research, carr-l@ulkyvm.louisville.edu); Journet (journet@qucdn.queensu.ca); NIT (New Information Technologies, nit@chron.com); or Journal-Net (International Journalist Network, journal-net@planet.org). Also, alt.journalism on Usenet is a good general interest journalism newsgroup. HOW DO I SUBSCRIBE? ------------------- Since you have received this message, you already are subscribed to online-news. For future reference, here's how to subscribe: Send a message to Majordomo@marketplace.com In the BODY of the message, type: subscribe online-news Then type a BRIEF description of who you are (this information will be used to compile a directory of online-news subscribers). If you wish to subscribe on a different address, send the following command instead: subscribe online-news other-address@your_site.your_net HOW DO I UNSUBSCRIBE? --------------------- Send a message to Majordomo@marketplace.com In the BODY of the message, type: unsubscribe online-news If you are subscribed with some other address, you will have to send the following command instead: unsubscribe online-news other-address@your_site.your_net HOW DO I POST A MESSAGE TO THE LIST? ------------------------------------ Address your message to online-news@marketplace.com BTW, this is an unmoderated list. What you post to the list is not screened by a human. When you send a message to online-news@marketplace.com, each subscriber to this list receives a copy of your words in his/her email box. Please behave yourselves and consider your words carefully before posting. If you must flame someone, send it privately; don't post it to the list. Remember, you are responsible for what you post. Thank you for your cooperation. HOW CAN I REACH THE LIST OWNER? ------------------------------- Steve Outing manages the online-news list. He can be reached at owner-online-news@marketplace.com or outings@netcom.com (voice: 510-236-2118). WHO MAKES THIS LIST POSSIBLE? ----------------------------- Online-news is hosted on marketplace.com as a public service to the journalism community by Cyberspace Development Inc., a new company providing consulting and software development services to businesses interested in selling their services or products via the Internet. To find out how the Cyberspace Development team can help get your publication online, send a message to info@marketplace.com or point your gopher at marketplace.com. Or contact Andrew Currie at currie@marketplace.com, voice: 303-938-8684, or fax: 303-546-9667. Special thanks to Bryan Griffin of Cyberspace Development for setting up this list! DOES THE LIST ACCEPT AUTOMATED COMMANDS? ---------------------------------------- Online-news runs on Brent Chapman's "Majordomo" mailing list manager. It understands the following commands, which should be sent to Majordomo@marketplace.com (commands must be in the BODY of the message; subject line can be left blank). index online-news Return an index of files you can "get" for online-news. get online-news Get a file related to online-news. who online-news Get a list of who subscribes to online-news. help Find out more about the automated server and the commands it understands. More than one request can be put in one message, as long as each is on a separate line. All will be returned as email. (Currently this list has only these limited capabilities. We plan to upgrade it in the future, so watch this space.)
